| Bath
is a world renowned heritage location and during April each year the
city hosts a world heritage day. The main attraction is the Ermine
Street Guard, an internationally recognised Roman Army reenactment
group that displays all over Britain and Europe.
The ESG as they are also known were
formed in 1972 and specialise in reconstruction and display of Roman
armour and weapons from the first century AD. The members of the
society are extremely passionate and knowledgable about the Roman
Army of the imperial period and endeavour to interact with the public
and raise interest of their period. Providing a highly absorbing
and educational experience.
They reconstruct exactly Roman army
units of the time, with legionaries, the front line soldier of the
legions, the auxiliary soldier who supported the legionaries, and
officers such as the centurion. They also show the public elaborate
drill and battle tactics such as the testudo in which soldiers locked
shields to block enemy missiles.
During April 2009 to mark World
Heritage Day the ESG performed in front of Bath Abbey - and in April
2010 at the equivalent event they turned out with a full muster
before the stunning back drop of the Royal Crescent. The galleries
show the full range of skills of the ESG, including the use of missile
weapons and catapults which the Roman army would have used in battle
and siege.
